Bookmark and Share
WINGATE, N.C.—The Limestone College men’s and women’s swimming teams both finished second at the Wingate University Fall Frenzy Invitational over the weekend. Wingate University won the event on the women’s and men’s side.

Some highlights from the weekend included Isabell Nystrom’s “A” cut time in the 1650-yard freestyel, which also set a new team record. By qualifying with an “A” time, Nystrom is now eligible to compete in four events at nationals as she has recorded several “B” cut times. Her second-place finishes in the 500 and 200 freestyle events this past weekend were “B” cut times. Marta Stepien recorded four “B” cut times, and she set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke as she missed an “A” cut time by .08 of a second.

Limestone’s women’s 200-yard freestyle relay finished second with a time of 1:41.79. Renee Pouchet (Maraval, Trinidad), Raquel Rudolph (Pickens, S.C.), Jenna Arington (Pittsford, N.Y.), and Nathania La Pierre (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago) all contributed in the effort. The 400-freestyle relay team of Pouchet, Marta Stepien (Kedzierzyn, Poland), Ines Speranda (Split, Croatia), and Arington placed second (4:05.84). Pouchet, Stepien, Speranda, and Rudolph all pitched in for a second-place finish in the 200-medley relay (1:52.25). Freeman, Joanna Mannon (Huntersville, N.C.), Brandy McCauley (Augusta, Ga.), and Alexa Stenger (Long Beach, N.Y.) finished the 800-freestyle relay in 8:04.13 to win the event.

Isabell Nystrom (Stockholm, Sweden) took second in the 500 freestyle (5:08.15) and the 200 freestyle (2:00.29) events. She also won the 1650 freestyle (17:28.87). Stepien won the 200 individual medley (2:09.85), the 400 individual medley (4:36.77), and the 200 breaststroke (2:22.26). She went on to place second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.95).  Rudolph finished first in the 50 free (25:03). Anna Freeman finished third in the 400 individual medley (4:48.08). Pouchet won the 100 backstroke (1:00.27).

“Our seniors, Jenna, Brandy, and Ines, really provided a lot of leadership and team spirit which was instrumental in guiding our team to a second-place finish,” commented Limestone Head Coach Robert Gecan. “During this long weekend, I was profoundly impressed by how the women’s team responded and their commitment to supporting each other was a key to the result.”

Lance Maxwell (Vienna, Austria), Gilles Gutnecht (Marseille, France), Gene Magliaro (Greenville, S.C.), and Jason Wilson (Charleston, S.C.) finished the 200-freestyle relay in 1:27.78 to place second.  The 200-medley relay team of Magliaro, Deniz Bilgin (Instanbul, Turkey), Gutnecht, and Maxwell was second (1:38.61). Gutnecht, Nikolaus Thomas (Denver, Colo.), Zeljko Karaman (Split, Croatia), and Blake Schaeffer (Simpsonville, S.C.) swam the 800-freestyle relay in 7:15.57 to finished second. The 400-freestyle relay team recorded another second place finish with a time of 3:13.05. Members of that squad included Maxwell, Gutnecht, Magliaro, and Thomas.

Gutnecht took second in the 500 freestyle (4:44.30). Maxwell was fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.85) and second in the 100 butterfly (52.94). Karaman placed third in the 400 individual medley (4:21.81). Gutnecht, Maxwell, and Thomas finished second (1:44.24), third (1:46.72), and fourth (1:48.53), respectively, in the 200 freestyle.

“We were missing a few key swimmers on the men’s side due to illness,” commented Gecan.

The Saints and Lady Saints will take a break until January. The teams will face Saints Leo in an exhibition meet on January 9 in Saints Leo, Fla. Limestone hosts Indiana University of Pennsylvania on January 13 in Gaffney, S.C., at 5 p.m.
