ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—The Limestone College baseball team recorded a win and a loss at the Flagler Challenge on Saturday. The Saints defeated Flagler College 11-2, but went on to lose to the University of Alabama at Huntsville, 9-8. Limestone’s record stands at 1-1 for the season.
The Limestone College baseball team split its doubleheader on Saturday with Flagler and The University of Alabama-Huntsville. The Saints defeated Flagler by a score of 11-2 and fell to the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville 9-8. The Saints stand at 1-1 on the season. Flagler and Alabama-Huntsville also stand at 1-1 on the season.
In the Game 1 win the Saints came out swinging, scoring 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning.
Joe Maloney (Aston, Pa.) fueled the Saints offense in game one going 2-5 with a home run and 5 runs batted in. Maloney’s 3-run home run in the 5th inning blew the game open for the Saints.
Drew Lydon (White Plains, Md.) was 3-5 with 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.
David Christy (Greenville, S.C.),
Tim Welsh (Kalamazoo, Mich.),
Micah Robinson (Deland, Fla.), and
Michael Hughey (Gaffney, S.C.) had 2 hits apiece for the Saints.
Brock White (Gaffney, S.C.) got the win as he threw the final 5 innings only allowing one hit while striking out five batters.
Thomas Fekete (Aiken, S.C.) started the game for the Saints and pitched the first 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while also striking out 5 batters.
Payne Maddox led Flagler going 2-3 with one run batted in. Johnny Gaines took the loss for Flagler as he allowed 7 earned runs in 5 innings of work.
In Game 2 the Saints fell to the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville. The Chargers took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. However, the Saints came right back to score 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning. The game would go back and forth with the Chargers scoring the eventual game-winning run the bottom of the 8th inning.
Jerome Dunning led the Chargers going 3-5 with a home run and 3 runs batted in. Dan Lazzaroni picked up the win for Alabama-Huntsville as he pitched the final 1.1 innings.
Limestone was led by Christy in Game 2 as he went 2-5 with 4 runs batted in. Lydon was 3-6 and Hughey went 3-5 with one run batted in and 2 runs scored for the Saints.
Josh Wood (Gastonia, N.C.) and
Cameron Ward (Deland, Fla.) each had 2 hits apiece.
Kyle Matheney (Spindale, N.C.) took the loss for the Saints in game 2.
Marques Kyles (Spartanburg, S.C),
Michael McAbee (Boiling Springs, S.C),
Clint Medlin (Gastonia, N.C.), and
Cameron Culp (Gaffney, S.C) all pitched in Game 2 for Limestone.
Limestone will face Alabama-Huntsville again on Sunday with the first pitch slated for 11 a.m.
